In 1916, the fort of Vaux was shelled by almost 8,000 shells a day. Its garrison resisted and fought heroically before being forced to surrender through exhaustion. It became the symbol of the resistance of the soldiers of Verdun. A visit to the fort of Vaux will give you a sense of the unspeakable intensity of the fighting in the Battle of Verdun.
